Antigone Kotsiopulos Retirement Party
April 18, 2006

Antigone Kotsiopulos, one of our beloved advisors of College Council and the Associate Dean of CAHS has announced her retirement. In an effort to thank Antigone for her time commitment and dedication to council, DLC hosted a beautiful retirement party for her. All members helped bring the spring-themed party together by contributing entrees and desserts, decorating our usual meeting space, and even putting together a slideshow of photographs from the past year. Antigone was presented with a gift of appreciation from DLC consisting of a framed photograph of the 2005- 2006 DLC. Antigone was a strong asset to DLC and all members on council will truly miss her. Thank you, Antigone, for all your enthusiasm and insightfulness.

President Penley's Visit
April 4, 2006

CAHS Dean’s Leadership Council was fortunate to have President Penley visit council this evening. President Penley answered a few questions posed by council members and discussed a few key points. Some of the key points addressed included encouraging council to invite admissions officers at CSU to campus and tour our facilities and departments with in CAHS. He encouraged us, as leaders, when we graduate to leave something behind at CSU that you are proud of, and at every step of the journey through life and college, to pause for a moment and reflect and enjoy. Penley also noted that patience is the key to leadership and as leaders we are the people bold enough to stand between the known and the unknown. It was a real pleasure having President Penley come to council and speak with us. Many members were very pleased with his visit and felt they got a great experience out of the event. And we hope he will feel welcome to come speak to Council in the near future.

We all learned about equality, equal opportunity, empowerment, and communications between the sexes! We were extremely excited to have Ms. Linder, who had all the members participate in a number of empowering, interactive activities that focused on each member’s positive traits and accomplishments. Having Ms. Linder was a very unique opportunity for all the members!

Valentines for Seniors
February 14, 2006

Making Valentines for senior citizens is such a wonderful experience for our council members, and the seniors at the Spring Creek Assisted Living Center love to interact with us and enjoy the holiday! From past experience, this event has proved to be very special specifically to the seniors who "enjoy our young faces and love hearing what we are a part of." Council members were able to relax and get to know each other better while we constructed the Valentines. When we delivered them to Spring Creek, we had a wonderful time. We were able to visit with many of the residents and get to know them. You hear so many interesting stories from them! It is truly a reward to know that we were able to make a difference and give these residents a nice Valentines Day, and that they sincerely enjoy our company.

Holiday Party
December 6, 2005

The Community Organization Reaching Empowerment Center offers parenting skills, children programs, and support groups in Larimer County who often are living in poverty conditions. Every year the Dean’s Leadership Council pairs with the CORE Center to co-host a holiday party for children and their parents in the Lory Student Center. This is a very touching event because it allows the children and parents to enjoy an evening with food, drinks, and presents for the children as well as allowing the council members to experience and interact with community members. This year council conjured up a whole variety of events for the children and families to enjoy. Some of the activities included a cakewalk, gingerbread house decorating, face painting, holiday crafts, pin the nose on Rudolph, and picture frame decorating. When Santa arrives, played this year by Rob Kirkpatrick, the children receive a gift and have a Polaroid taken with Santa. Once the photograph is developed, the kids can mount the photo in the frame they just decorated and hang it in their home as a decoration. Many families who come to the CORE Center Holiday Party have multiple frames with photos with Santa from multiple years. Dean April Mason was able to join us for the evening and said this about the evening, “I saw so many happy people in that room. I can only begin to appreciate how much preparation and organization it took to make everything work. Thank you for your hard work, your caring and your commitment.” Every year the student and faculty volunteers, the children and families, and everyone involved with this event walk away with a little more holiday spirit and a smile on their faces. The CORE Center Holiday Party is truly one of the most rewarding and important activities for College Council. Remember volunteers are always welcome!

Ram Ride Participation
November 12, 2005

Council takes the safety and responsibility of students very seriously and by College Council participating in Ram Ride, council is promoting a safer and more socially responsible campus environment. RamRide is a safe ride program, which provides safe, nonjudgmental rides for CSU students with the goal of improving safety of the Fort Collins community. CAHS Dean’s Leadership Council tries to participate in RamRide at least once a semester. The RamRide evenings are organized by our ASCSU representatives and for this particular RamRide outing College Council had eight members volunteer. Council will continue to volunteer for this event and will hopefully increase the number of volunteers we can contribute to this excellent cause.

Hunger Banquet
October 11, 2005

CAHS Dean’s Leadership Council attended the 1st Annual Hunger Banquet established by Oxfam America and hosted by the International Development Studies along with many other sponsors. The Hunger Banquet is part of Oxfam America’s Fast for a World Harvest campaign. For over 30 years Fast has been raising awareness and gathering donations to fight world hunger. As a group College Council purchased meal tickets for every member of council to participate in the Hunger Banquet. At the banquet we were randomly given an identity for the night with a socioeconomic category assigned to us. The different income brackets, ranging from high to low income, determined everything from where you were able to sit in the dining hall to what type and quantity of food you were able to eat. The majority of council members received low-income assignments, where only about four members received mid-income assignments, and only one member, Dan Harter, received a high-income assignment. Low-income participants received a small amount of rice for dinner and had to sit on the floor. Mid-income people received rice and beans for dinner and were allowed to sit on chairs, but with no table. And high-income participants received a dinner salad, bread, spaghetti, and vegetables. Members of the high-income category were serenaded by a violinist and were able to eat at a table with tablecloth and had the luxury of using cutlery. The purpose of the Hunger Banquet was to show by example how many people in the world are in poverty and going hungry every night. Attending this event was an eye-opening experience for our council. The money to purchase the tickets was directly donated to Oxfam America and Fast to aid in the fight against world hunger. For more information regarding the Hunger Banquet please visit www.hungerbanquet.org and for more information on Oxfam America please visit www.oxfamamerica.org.

Cans Around the Oval
September 13, 2005

Sponsored and produced by the Student Leadership and Civic Engagement office at Colorado State University, the Cans Around the Oval food drive competition raised over 117,000 pounds this year for the Food Bank for Larimer County. Cans Around the Oval is a CSU tradition, where students, faculty and staff partner with community members, local media, and area businesses, to raise awareness about hunger! This year our Dean’s Leadership Council donated an amazing amount of nonperishable goods, totaling just under 300 pounds! College Council was a major contributor to the food drive and nearly tripled the amount of food CAHS Dean’s Leadership Council donated from last year. Dean April Mason applauded our contribution to Cans Around the Oval by saying, “You are all to be commended. The food goes to the very needy in our community, and your effort is so greatly appreciated by those recipients and the agencies that serve them. Thank you for your hard work and great example of team effort!” We were extremely happy with the amount of food we helped raised and collected from the entire College of Applied Human Sciences!

Ram Welcome
August 18, 2005

The first event of the fall for council was Ram Welcome. Ram Welcome is an exciting event required for every first year student to begin his or her transition to CSU. Ram Welcome is set up to help new students explore academic programs, meet faculty, and learn about the many services available to support their college experience. Council members helped out with Ram Welcome by preparing tables and hosting tours of buildings new CAHS students would soon be occupying. This year council was asked to speak to the incoming class of CAHS students at a lecture established to personally welcome the new students to CSU. Crystal Kostroski (Vice President), Brenton McCoy, Kristen Morris (Webmaster/Historian), and Ann Szynskie (Secretary) spoke on the many different opportunities CAHS offers including CAHS Dean’s Leadership Council. Council also hosted an informational table for College Council and CAHS where we handed out information and goodies to students and had a fun game to test student’s knowledge of our college. I am extremely pleased to partner with Dr. Napier in developing this curriculum once taught only to CEOs and members of the corporate elite." In reflecting on her participation in the program, Kostroski had this to say, "This entire week was a whirlwind experience that landed me in a whole new world. The activities we went through taught me some very valuable lessons that I never would have learned in a lecture hall." Winter's advice to her peers regarding their possible participation in a future program is, "Don't think twice about it. You will never get so much out of an individual session as you do here." "In the end, Leadership Honors Bootcamp is a personal journey which transforms those with leadership potential and positions into those with real leadership power," concluded Jackson .
